TitleĀ of Research:

Geomechanical Kinematic Analysis of 3D Sand Compression Specimens

Description of Research:

Early foundation/ earth constructions were based on empirical/ observations of previously built foundation/ earth structures. Improved understanding of soil mechanics were then introduced by Terzaghi in 1920s. Since then, his findings has been used as the rational behind understanding soil- structures behavior by foundation/ geotechnical engineers. Similar to other materials, the critical state/ failure mechanism of soils is stress- strain related and deformation can be assumed based on the stress- strain information obtained through experimentation and numerical simulations. The following study aims to identify early indicators of failure based on kinematics information obtained using 3D Digital Image Correlation (3D DIC) on several triaxial compression test on sand specimens. Experimental uncertainties observed in traditional calibrations are minimized with the utilization of 3D DIC.
